Students and Employees
Virginia Tech strongly recommends that all students and employees subscribe to VT Alerts, which can be sent to a cellphone (by text or voice message), landline, or a non-Virginia Tech email address. Subscribers are able to choose up to three preferred contact methods when subscribing. Employees and students are not automatically enrolled to receive VT Alerts via cellphone, landline, or a non-Virginia Tech email address.
When a VT Alert is sent out, the information is communicated with the community via a combination of updates across:
- Text messages
- Phone calls
- Emails
- Updates on vt.edu
- Updates on the Virginia Tech status page
- Social media
Additionally, on the Blacksburg campus, fire alarm annunciators, electronic message boards, emails to vt.edu addresses, and Desktop Alerts will be deployed. Further, outdoor sirens on the Blacksburg campus may also be used to promulgate VT Alerts messaging.
All members of the university community are asked to log into their accounts at least annually to ensure their contact information and notification preferences, including region, are up-to-date. Doing so prior to a public test allows for the opportunity to validate any changes to your account.
